Simon Hartshorne
I use drawing and comic/cartoon structures to communicate ideas that I get by looking at things and finding problems with them. Using this format allows me
to isolate the ideas from any existing context, so that the content is the substance of the work.
I do not consider myself to be a cartoonist but an artist who has been influenced by their direct approach, especially that of political and satirical
cartoonists. Also parallel with these cartoonists, humour is a large part of my work, but I think it comes with the territory. The humour developed quite
naturally in the work because of the issues I took on, I think it has something to do with laughing vs. crying. But I like the fact that the drawings have
become something between sad and laughable.
The concerns within the work can sometimes appear diverse, but what I am trying to do is to readdress the context of commonplace situations and the
acceptability of those situations, such as living in society and constantly being told what reality is by mass media, when its only priority is to make
money ('it will change your life forever').
